Hudson Valley Happenings Blog : I Swear I Will Never Take Electricity For Granted Again

I Swear I Will Never Take Electricity For Granted Again

Here I am back in the modern world.  Yes I have been living without electricity at home for the better part of four days and it is soooo nice to turn on a switch and see that amazing little light bulb create illumination.

I don't even mind so much that I accidentally deleted a whole page of comments from my log this morning, sorry if your's was on the list I really only meant to delete the one from the spammer. I did lose a few points in the process but I will get back on track as soon as I catch up on the house full of laundry and everything else that has been waiting for Ben Franklin's discovery to be restored to me.

Hope you all survived without my posts on things To Do in Orange County this weekend, there wasn't much doing in my part of the county anyway.  Here are some pictures of how were spent the evenings in the living room with the wood stove cranking out heat.

Not totally in the dark

We weren't totally in the dark.
The glow you see on my daughters' faces is the light from the cell phones in their hands.

I did save my food from the fridge by burying it in coolers in the two feet of snow in the back yard.  Oh yes fun was had by all this weekend. I will never take electricity and it's importance to our lives for granted again.  Have a great week.

Paddy, we don't realize how much we take things like electricity for grated, until it's not working.  Good to hear it's back on.

Patty,

Sounds like you were camping out in the house.  It is often that we take the simplest things for granted.  Glad to hear you are back to the electrified.

We were the lucky ones in New Jersey not to lose power during these past few snow storms.  My kids have 2 days taken away from spring break because of using too many snow days.  Glad to hear your electricity is back on!  Get ready for the meltdown now that spring is around the corner.

Hi Paddy,

I'll bet the silence was deafening. You just don't realize how much white noise exists until the power goes out.

Paddy ~ I'm glad your back. We lost electricity for a couple of hours and was so lost without my computer.

Four days is a long time. Certainly glad to see you back in the rain (versus the snow) ;)

Paddy....Glad you are back to normal.  It's amazing how we take things for granted and don't appreciate them until we don't have them.

4 days?!?  Good grief, our power went out for like 4 minutes during a thunderstorm this evening and I freaked out.  4 days is an eternity!!  So glad you are back in the 21st century with the rest of us :)

Paddy, we are on a well so if power goes out so does our water, have to go outside if you know what I mean. We lose all comforts, I like camping but not in winter. Welcome back.

Thanks for all the comments I have been playing catch up now and have not quite made it past the work that built up.  Nick I had to let you know that I am on a well too.  We were melting snow to take care of the toilet flushing issues (gravity flushes it if you add water and well with so much snow we had water) and showers were taken at friends houses who did not lose power.  have a great Tuesday

Paddy, we don't realize how much we depend on modern conveniences until they go awry! Glad you are back!

ahhhh the creature comforts of life. Dare disrespect them! ;)

Good idea to melt the snow to flush toilets.  I lived for 3 months without electricity following a major hurricane when I was a teenager.  I remember it vividly and I agree with you, it teaches you a healthy respect for these comforts we take for granted.  Glad you have electricity back and I hope we are moving on-ward to Spring.

Oh my!  Four days without power!  During our big storm last month, the only miracle was that the power actually stayed on.  If I hadn't been able to blog while house bound, I'd have gone nuts.

Paddy,

Oh dear....I can't even imagine 4 days....heck I get annoyed after 4 hours!  You must have a ton to do....I do have to say I love the picture with your daughter's face glowing.....

Paddy, Thank God for the wood stove! We lost power once for 2 1/2 days back north.....the whole are went out It was October. so not too cold, but cold enough. The worst part was no water. Just heard from my friend in Coldspring. She is single ( no man to keep her warm) and was without power for 2 1/2 days. No source of heat. I don't know how she did it!
