Hudson Valley Happenings Blog : That "Can Do" Will Get You To Your Goal

That "Can Do" Will Get You To Your Goal

When I was quite small and learning to walk I was a determined child.  My mother told me that I would repeat "Can Do" over and over when trying to The Can Do got me up on my feettake those first steps.  They called me the "Can Do" girl.  As I look back over my accomplishments in life I see that the times I employed a "Can Do" attitude I always got to my goal.  I think the times I floundered and failed to achieve are those times that I lost that "Can Do" attitude.

I was a good student in school using that "Can Do" to earn good grades and excel but sometime over the course of high school never managed to focus in on a career path. Well it was the 1970's, after all, and women were having a hard time focusing on exactly what it was we were supposed to be doing.  I did head to college for a year but without my "Can Do" attitude.  I decided to take some time off and here I am 30+ years later without a college degree. I have had many great highlights and brilliant shinning moments during those 30 years in which I decided to accomplish a goal and brought that "Can Do" back to the forefront of my mind.

I think that we all need to remember that no matter where we are in life, we are given moments to make decisions that will send us on a path ofCan Do and accomplish the goal successes or keep us pinned down by fear of failure or despair.   My wish for all of you today is that you find your "Can Do" and get it done. Make today that moment of decision.  Choose your goal and you are on the way.  Take that first step and the rest will follow.

Hi Paddy~  Having a "Can DO" attitude is the only way to go!  Not only do you feel so much better with that attitude, but you do so much better.  Being positive is the only way to be.  Life is so much better this way!

Of course you can! Thanks for your story. It reminded me of how I learned to roller skate. At the time, our house was on top of a hill in a central Connecticut city. The sidewalks were made of a smooth rock rather than concrete and perfect for roller skating. The problem was they were hard and could quickly bloody a knee or two.

It seemed like forever, but eventually I got to the bottom and could safely stop without heading into the street. Although my Mom thought I had polio because I kept coming home with bruised knees, my Dad kept reminding me the only way I could learn to do something new was by making mistakes.

He also told me I could do anything I set out to accomplish and the choice would always be mine. Both my parents believed I would have the life I could create and starting me on that path was a gift.

It is never too late. I am sure you have lots of tread on your tires to return to school if you wish. Thank you for making a difference here.

None of us would walk or talk if we didn't have a Can Do attitude when we were 1 year old. Those of us who never lost it can pick ourselves up when we are adults and move forward after a tumble.

Paddy - That's so true.  I find myself looking for those "Can Do" moments all the time.  It's been so much fun to discover all the things I can do, enjoy and explore at this point in my life.

Great post and you are so right in saying that you CAN do what you put your mind to do.  The power of the mind is a truly incredible thing.

Hi Paddy - Such a lovely post.  It reminds me of a time when I had a voluntary position where I was in charge of huge and overwhelming event.  I knew what needed to be, put my down and plowed through it.  It was most successful annual event the organization had ever seen.  I did it because no one told me I couldn't.  Like the old adage says, "If you think you can't, you're right".
