Moving On Out To the Country - The Simple Life May Not Be So Simple -Part 3 In A Series

One of the most attractive sights of our rural locations are open fields and beautiful farms.  Nothing is prettier than coming over a rise to see a herd of cattle grazing or an orchard of fruit trees reaching as far as the eye can see.  It is a draw that encourages many people to move nearby for a chance at the simple life but if you are planning to move to a location with working agricultural properties you need to be aware of the "facts of life" in a farming location. As a potential home buyer you need to be prepared for the common practices of our farmers and ranchers and realize that they are not going to change their way of living for you just because you bought the property next door.

Farmers get up and start work early every day.  They don't often have the luxury of a day off and, especially during spring, summer, and fall months, you are likely to hear them at work very early in the morning. During certain times the fields may be barren and this can cause a dust bowl to rival some of those from the 1930's.  There are very intense smells and there may be chemicals in the air at times if the farmer uses them for crop management. Dairy cows will need to get to the barn to be milked twice a day and, if they are in a field across the road from the barn, the farmer may need to shut down the road while the cows cross for milking (please note that beeping your horn during these times will not help and may cause the process to last longer if you spook the animals.)

If you are ready to live side by side with the farmer he will welcome you to his community and be a great neighbor.  If, on the other hand, you think you can change the neighborhood once you move in to suit you think again.  The farmer has the law on his side and will win any challenge to stop normal agricultural practices. You can move close to our farms without living next door and save the simple life for a short drive to a farm stand.

Thanks for the comment Mike.  I was in Tucson in the late 1970's. I bet it has changed but I am sure the desert is still as beautiful.  Our green hills and wonderful rivers are great here though.  Thanks for the comment.

Paddy - Well written and so true.  I know  some people moved into an area consisting of mostly farms and then wanted to change everything it just doesn't work that way.

Good morning Paddy. I like the post so true. I grew up on a 300 acre farm and there is something to farm life that most people will never know. The work is hard but very rewarding. Look forward to your next post.

Thanks Jennifer.  I hope that people will think about the local area before they move so they don't come in and become disenchanted.

My grandparents had a small farmette in NJ where we spent summers.  This time of year I think about the many fields of strawberries I picked.  Great memories but hard work.  Thanks for your comment Michael

Paddy- good post.  I live and work in rural MS.  This time of year, it's not unusual to get stuck behind a tractor on the 2-lane highway.  I am alway amazed at people who say they want to move to the country, but then complain about how far it is from 'everything'.

Pam, I really think that they don't have any idea about the lifestyle they are buying into sometimes.  That is why it is so important for them to have an agent who will look out for their interests and let them know the facts of life in the farm lane. LOL thanks for the comment
