One of the gems I often visit in the City of Middletown New York is the Middletown Thrall Library. The library, is housed in a former train station which was built in 1896 and served passengers through 1983, has an extensive collection of books, periodicals, audio and video collections, a reading room, a computer center with many available stations, a children's library with many programs for chilren, and a performance/meeting room where they screen movies and have performances that are open to the public. I was inspired to feature this wonderful resource by Jennifer Fivelsvel's blog Come Visit The Expanded Starr Library - Rhinebeck NY The library is available to use by the public and is a part of the Ramapo Catskill Library System which allows library patrons from many Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan County Libraries to check out books and other materials.
This is a view of the library from the municiple parking lot located off of North Street.
Here is the sign that explains the buildings unique style and former use.

Hey Paddy Paddy, great post! Love the eye candy and will add this spot to my list of things to do while running around in your neck of the woods! :-)
Hi Carolyn I hope you get up here soon.
what are periodicals again? :)
Hey you young whippersnapper. Those were those things we read for news before that newfangled Internet thing you kids have today. Just kidding Greg I am gearing up for a Civil War Reenactment so my mind is in the 1860s a bit this week. Have a good one.
Paddy, that is really interesting that they converted an old train station to a library. Even though I love AR, I still like to going to book stores and libraries. Something about being able to pick up a book or magazine and being able to hold it in your hands.
When is your reenactement?
Thanks for asking Sondra. We will be at Liberty NY this coming weekend Aug 2 -3. Thanks for asking. BTW I love books and magazines too.
Maybe you will have some pictures to share. It seems like quiet a few people enjoy taking part in Civil War reenactments. Take care...
It's possible Sondra It's definitely possible.
Paddy, what an awesome train stationlibrary, to kewl.
Thanks Duane - The tracks are gone but the building is being put to good use.
Hey Paddy Paddy, I keep getting closer and closer. Missed you while I was in Greenwood Lake today. I hope to be back up again tomorrow if I can talk the hubby into babysitting the boys. (He will probably want to golf, so I may be begging on bended knee. My luck, the man will be working overtime again. He's a seriously devoted worker, so we shall see. If I can clear Stephen's schedule I might be able to bring the little minions with me, which will be very interesting, indeed - LOL)
To bad I moved C I lived in Greenwood Lake for a few years between 1999 and 2001 and if I was there I oculd have seen you. Minions or not come on up. I like minions and have no fear.... although I may regret it I say bring em on!
Paddy - You know how I feel about libraries. Thanks for the mention.
The Middletown Thrall Library is beautiful, I like the fact that it is hosted in an old railroad building. The Hudson Valley has many historic train station, I only wish the train was still available in some of those area.
Cool post Paddy. I like that they kept the old train station canopy. Oftentimes, builders take away the 'carm' associated with older structures...
You are welcome and I know what you mean Jennifer. Lucky for Middletown the train station has moved but service is still available.
Yes Michael It is really nice that it has a lot of original features. They kept a lot inside too. For example one of the old fixtures became a community information booth. The grand staircase leads to the children's section and community rooms. It is cool!!
Paddy- great shots!!! Also, since all the libraries in our area are linked, you can go on-line and order items that are not available at your library. My husband does this all the time. He looks at the system-wide card catalog on the internet, then orders what he wants, and it's delivered to our local library. It's great. (My hubby doesn't read, but he does love movies, so he gets movies from the library.)
I know Becky we use the system all the time for the kids school stuff and other books we can't find locally.
