Hudson Valley Happenings Blog : What's That Black Speck on Your Leg?

What's That Black Speck on Your Leg?

Yesterday My husband and I went out to look at some multi family investment properties.  The properties are located over in the next county and I had arraigned to meet the listing agent there as it was easier than going to her office for the keys.

The second property we saw was a Victorian House with a really neat small 2 BR cottage with a one car garage out back.  It was vacant.  We looked through the rooms and then left the listing agent in the house while we went out back.  When we returned inside I noticed a flea on my leg and said I think you've got fleas here. We all ran outside where we started brushing off our legs like mad.  The listing agents pants were literally covered with the tiny beasties.  We were brushing and slapping away as the little boy from the downstairs apartment came out to ride his bike.  He just sat there and stared at the group of us idiots.  I finally went over and explained that there were fleas in the back house and he was greatly relieved.  I think he thought we had all lost it.

Flea

We finally got them all off (I hope!) and went on to tour the other apartments.  All day today I have still felt imaginary fleas on my legs.  I itch every time I think about it.

So just in case you if you have never experienced this delight before; here is fair warning.  When going through properties that have been closed for a while, especially in warmer weather, be on guard for these little buggers.  Take a quick look at your legs as you walk through and get the heck out of dodge as soon as you see the first small black speck appear.

Paddy - I've been there more times than I care to remember.  :o)  Glad I'm not the only one... lol

I am glad it isn't just here in the northeast. You should have seen that poor little kid's face though.  Priceless. Thanks Kristina.

Paddy...

I hate it when that happens, and I always worry about a rogue flea riding home with me. Yikes.

I just can't stand bugs!  I know some are good but I'd rather they be good somewhere besides on me!

knock on wood that has never happened to me.  I will tell you that in our area ticks with Lyme's Disease are the thing to watch out for.

Yuck!  I am getting itchy just thinking about it.

Did you say that this house was vacant?

Posted by LLoyd Nichols~SW Florida Homes (Sandals Realty) about 1 year ago

Some one needs to fog the place.  That is terrible.  Imagine what a buyer might think.

Yep, I'm a flea magnet and my husband is a misquote magnet. The bad thing is that when fleas get that bad sometimes it takes quite a while to eradicate them... and I know how you feel about thinking every little itch might still be one!

That is why flea spray is part of my foreclosure kit.  The weather is getting cooler so hopefully the creepy crawlys will start to die off.

Yuckers. I can't imagine that! I have had fleas on me but it's been a long time and only when I have been out of the country.

Better than ticks... I hate those.  Had to walk the property line on one place, and found the little monster later.  He was inside my sock.

Oh my word, now here's something you don't read everyday (LOL). My poor bay-bay. That whomps! :-)

Paddy, I too thought of ticks. I think I would wear pants and white socks when viewing vacants--ugh!  Now I'M itchy :)

Paddy - This is an experience I would want to avoid a all cost.  Like you I would still be feeling imaginary fleas.

I cannot say that I have been attacked by fleas, but I have had issues with ticks especially in abandoned properties that have high grass. Generally do a tick check as they like to attach themselves in the darndest places...

You always have to watch out for the one that gets away Richard, LOL (not so funny if the bugger gets into the car with you and multiplies.  I think I will stop and vacume the car today)

I'm with you in most cases Sara but I do like butterflies.

We have ticks too Ashley.  Hate 'em.

thanks for the comment Gail

Yes it was vacant Lloyd (I've always wanted to know why Lloyd has 2 Ls, oh well.)

The listing agent was on that right away and I am sure the fogging is occuring this week, Angelia.

I know Teresa.  Some people are attractive to certain bugs.  My daughter will get a bit by mosquitoes before we even know they are out.

Good plan Cindy

Well they like vacant houses so be careful Lindsey.

Oh yes Lane.  I am always careful when I walk property and keep repellent in the car (sometimes I even pull out my old rubber barn boots to put on if I am really concerned)

It is one of the dangers of Real Estate Carolyn. Not mentioned in the Safety Materials we are given though.

Sorry Carole I didn't mean to spread the itch.

Yes they do follow you around for a while Jennifer.  I have an active imagination so it will be some time before I stop felling them.

Oh yes Michael ticks do find the most interesting places to go.  Once found one inside my two ear old daughters diaper after she when on a hike with my husband.  I almost had a heart attack.

Well, great - you got me scratching!  What a HORRIBLE experience!  Keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen to me - I would freak!

It was pretty bad Leesa but we did like the property so maybe we will get something good along with the itches.

Paddy - you and Barbara S. Duncan can get together and have flea horror story sessions. Perhaps a bit of bug spray on the pants legs.

Posted by Mike Saunders - Athens, Ga & Surrounding Communities (Keller Williams Realty - Greater Athens) about 1 year ago

Just reading about the fleas makes me itch! I haven't run across any in vacant houses yet. Don't they need some critter to survive on?

Posted by Lizette Fitzpatrick - Principal Broker Kentucky Homes - Horse Farms (Lizette Realty - Lexington KY - Richmond KY) about 1 year ago

I will have to check out Barbara's tale Mike Thanks for stopping by and for the advice.

Well it depends on how long ago there was a critter there Lizette. Have a good one.
